A payroll heist goes badly wrong and, with his partner badly wounded, cop killer Nick Robey (John Garfield, Body and Soul, The Postman Always Rings Twice) finds himself alone and on the run. Desperate to escape the pursuing police Nick flees into a public swimming pool where he meets plain Peggy Dobbs (Shelley Winters, The Poseidon Adventure) and then charms and flatters his way into her affections. Mistaking his manipulations for genuine interest Peggy soon has Nick in a taxi back to her home, to meet her family. Feeling the net tighten, Nick holds Peggy hostage along with her parents and brother. Desperate hours pass as Nick grows ever more volatile and Peggy attempts to sacrifice herself for the sake of her family. Garfield, in his last film role before his death, gives a chilling performance as the paranoid Nick, less a cold-blooded killer than a man hardened by a lifetime of rejection. He Ran All The Way is also the first film to centre on the motif of a family held hostage by a killer-on-the-run.
