Synopsis:

A warm and witty comedy from screenwriter William Rose (The Ladykillers, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner), Touch and Go stars Jack Hawkins (Oh! What a lovely War, The League of Gentlemen) as Jim Fletcher, head of a British family, who in a fit of pique decides to up sticks and move them to Australia. His decision to move lock, stock and barrel to another continent does not thrill his family, threatening as it does both his daughter’s romance and the peace of mind of his long suffering wife (Margaret Johnson, Night of The Eagle). Even the much-loved family cat Heathcliff gives his verdict by swiftly disappearing and taking up residence at the local Docks. As the logistical and legal problems mount, even Jim begins to have second thoughts about departing for Down Under. The prevaricating continues right up to departure time as the family question whether it’s better to try and change with the times, rather than run away altogether. Nominated for Best Actress and Best Screenplay at the BAFTAs in 1956.
